ENGLISH - SYNOPSIS
Orgon, a rich and caring family man takes the penniless Tartuffe into his home because he has been fooled by the man’s apparent religious zeal. Tartuffe has managed to hoodwink the unsuspecting Orgon and Orgon’s mother Madame Pernelle, but no one else in the household is taken in by him. Dorine the maid, Orgon’s children and his wife all see through Tartuffe and devise ways to put a stop to his taking over their home. Tartuffe is clever however and secures from Orgon the promise of his daughter’s hand in marriage, receives a large gift of property and even has designs on Elmire, Orgon’s wife. Will Tartuffe succeed? Will Orgon be made to see the light or will the forces of the law side with Tartuffe when he takes his benefactor to the highest court in the land seeking retribution?
In this fast paced and witty comedy we see parallels with our modern day political landscape at home and abroad. It’s amazing how a play written in 1664 can still speak to us as if it were written yesterday. Richard Wilbur’s sizzling translation is fun and easy to follow.
