THE HEIDI CHRONICLES
by Wendy Wasserstein
directed by Annie Tyson
performed by BA (Hons) Acting Year 3
“The Heidi Chronicles” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by American playwright Wendy Wasserstein, first produced in 1988. The story follows Heidi Holland's journey from her high school days in the 1960s to her successful career as an art historian, specialised in Women’s Art, over two decades later.
The play explores themes such as feminism, the changing role of women, and the AIDS epidemic through Heidi’s personal and professional experiences. Throughout the play, Heidi confronts societal expectations and challenges the status quo, often at great personal cost. While she achieves professional success, she grapples with the sacrifices required to achieve it, including the loss of meaningful relationships and the struggle to balance work and the desire of motherhood. “The Heidi Chronicles” paints a poignant portrait of a woman’s journey to find her own voice and place in a rapidly changing world.
